This musical fits neatly with “Hairspray” and “Sister Act”. It is a feel-good show and has to have the audience going home in high spirits. The success of the piece does not depend on the performers alone. From the first beat from the orchestra the show has to flow uninterruptedly. In this production all the scene changes were choreographed seamlessly which is a credit to SM Lindsey Downes and her crew.
Lighting enhanced the imagery and the sound design has to be pitched above the normal levels without overpowering. This was satisfactorily achieved giving an extra dimension to the overall presentation. Costumes hair and make-up added that definition as to which characters were which.
Creativity, direction, music, and choreography brought out the best in both the musical and the cast. It was clearly a company show with everyone onstage working as one. This raised their performances to another level. Who would think a show about gender politics, and the stereotypical dumb blonde would work. In fact, it is an irresistible cocktail, tongue-in cheek show with fabulously playful musical. Basically, it is a story of a girl who enrols at a ‘90s sexist, male dominated, Harvard Law School to win back her boyfriend.
